His brother EV Adams joined in 1917 to form the partnership, handling conveyancing while Harry built the patent and trade mark side. The firm opened Cape Town in 1978 and Durban in 1983, took over the IP practice of Bowman Gilfillan in 2012 and moved its head office to Lynnwood Bridge, Pretoria, that same year. It also has offices in Sandton and Umhlanga, and a network of 24 associate offices elsewhere in Africa.
Intellectual property remains the centre of the firm: trade marks, patents, copyright, registered designs, plant breeders' rights and anti-counterfeiting work, with filings through the regional ARIPO and OAPI systems. It recently won a patent appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal. Beyond IP it runs corporate and commercial, banking, competition, tax, property and conveyancing, insurance, family law and dispute resolution teams, plus a forensic unit investigating commercial crime.
The firm says it has over 200 legal professionals, and its own history records 69 partners around 2022.
